Where to Eat in Malad After the Marathon
You finished. The medal is around your neck. The finish-line food was great but it is not a real meal. Here is where to point your tired legs (or your patient spouse’s car) for the post-race meal in Malad City.
Spero’s Family Restaurant
The classic Malad family restaurant and the post-race favorite for runners who want a sit-down meal with a real menu. American comfort food: steaks, burgers, pasta, salads, big breakfasts served all day, homemade pies. Booths are comfortable. Service is friendly and used to a crowd. The breakfast plates here have rescued many a runner who ran too long without enough calories.
Good for: sit-down family meal, big appetites, runners who want to refuel slowly.
Las Fiestas Mexican Restaurant
Real Mexican food in a town better known for Welsh heritage. The post-marathon meal of choice for runners craving carbs, salt, and protein in the same plate. Burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, tacos, all generous portions. Chips and salsa land on the table within a minute of sitting down. House margarita is well-loved by the back-of-pack crowd. Vegetarian options on the menu.
Good for: hungry groups, carb-heavy refuel, the runner who would kill for chips and salsa right now.
Irondoor Smokehouse
Slow-smoked BBQ that brings people from out of town on weekends. Brisket, pulled pork, ribs, smoked chicken, plus the standard sides done well. Sandwiches travel home easily if you are not in the mood for a sit-down meal. They run out of the favorites later in the day, so if your finish time is past 2 PM call ahead and ask them to hold something for you.
Good for: protein-forward runners, the post-marathon meat craving, takeout if you want to eat at your hotel.
Subway
Sometimes you just want a turkey sub and a bag of chips and to not think about the menu. Subway is on Main Street, walking distance from the finish line. Open by 8 AM, predictable, fast, and the easiest call if you are heading straight back to the airport and need food to go.
Good for: in-and-out, takeaway road food, the runner who needs calories without decision fatigue.
Other options worth knowing about
Beyond the marquee names, Malad has a small handful of additional spots that round out the post-race options:
- Local pizza places for the carb-and-cheese craving. Delivery hours are limited in town, so call ahead.
- Drive-thru fast food on the south end of town for the runner who just wants a burger and to go home.
- Coffee and pastry shops on Main Street open early on race morning and re-open after the awards ceremony.
- The Maverik and Sinclair stations have surprisingly good hot food counters if you want roller-grill calories on your drive home.
If you have lodging in Logan (35 minutes south in Utah), the full Logan restaurant scene opens up: from upscale to taco trucks to the Bluebird’s chocolate shop. Worth the drive if you have a Saturday night planned.
What to order if you have no idea
For a depleted marathon body in the first 2 hours after the finish, the priority order is: carbs first, salt second, protein third, fat last. A burrito plate, a sandwich and chips, a burger and fries, pancakes and eggs, or a plate of BBQ with cornbread and slaw all hit the marks. Drink water in front of you the whole time. Skip the heavy alcohol until after a full meal.
Tipping note
Malad restaurants get slammed on race weekend. Tip well. These are the same servers and cooks who will feed you next year. A good tip from a tired runner goes a long way in a small town.
