September Weather in Malad: What to Wear at the Start Line

Race day is Saturday, September 12, 2026. Here is what to expect from the weather, and what to wear so you start comfortable, race comfortable, and finish without overheating or underdressing.

Typical September weather in Malad

Race-day weather in Malad on the second Saturday of September typically looks like:

  • Race-morning low (8 AM): 42 to 50 degrees F
  • Mid-race temp (10 AM to noon): 55 to 65 degrees F
  • Finish-line temp (by 1 PM): 65 to 75 degrees F
  • Humidity: 30 to 45%, generally low
  • Wind: typically light, often calm at sunrise, picking up after 10 AM
  • Sun: mostly clear, occasional light cloud cover. UV is high at 4,500 feet even when air feels cool.
  • Rain: rare in September, average less than 0.5 inches for the whole month

What to wear at the start line

The classic small-town marathon trick: dress in throwaway layers you can shed in the first 2 miles. Specifically:

  • Race shorts or tights. Tights if you run cold below 50, shorts otherwise. We see roughly 50-50 at the start line.
  • A short-sleeve technical tee as your base.
  • A long-sleeve tee or light arm sleeves over the top, easy to remove.
  • A throwaway sweatshirt or trash bag for the start corral. Thrift store finds are perfect. Drop them at the start line bin (we donate them after the race).
  • Gloves and a beanie if you run cold. Both pack into a shorts pocket easily.

What works on the course

By mile 3 you are warm. By mile 6 you are climbing and you want layers off. By mile 10 (the high point) you are at peak warmth output. The classic mistake on a cool-morning race is overdressing and overheating on the climb.

If you can carry one small accessory: a foldable visor. The sun at 4,500 feet at 11 AM is strong on the eyes even when the air is cool. Better than a full hat in our experience.

What to bring in your gear bag

  • Warm change of clothes for after the finish (sweatshirt, sweatpants, dry socks)
  • A jacket and beanie if you plan to spectate the afternoon awards
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Sunglasses
  • An extra pair of shoes (your race shoes will be dusty from the dirt sections)

There is no formal bag drop. Malad is small enough that you can park within easy walking distance of the start, so plan to leave anything you do not want to carry in your car.

Special weather scenarios

If a cold front comes through (low 30s at start): add a pair of light mittens and a long-sleeve thermal as a base. Shed the long sleeve at mile 5.

If the day is hot for September (high 70s by noon): hydrate more, sponge yourself at every aid station, slow your first 5 miles by an extra 5 seconds. Heat-induced dehydration at altitude compounds fast.

If rain (unusual): a light water-resistant shell over your race tee. Skip the cotton. Body Glide on the chest, underarms, and inner thighs.

Bottom line

Cool morning, mild midday, low humidity, strong sun, low rain risk. The September weather in Malad is among the friendliest marathon weather you will find in the American West. Dress for the start, plan for the climb, expect to be peeling layers by mile 3.
